China's vast imperial capital draws visitors with its awe-inspiring cultural treasures from its golden era right up to its current, more austere communist days. Yet there are plenty of modern pulls to this city which has recently hosted the 2008 Olympics.
Dongcheng, Xicheng and Chongwen districts make up the city centre and are where you will find the most prominent attractions such as Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden Palace and the Temple of Heaven. Just outside the centre, in Haidian, you will find modern Olympic facilities and the Summer Palace while farther afield lies a much-visited section of the Great Wall.
Beijing is served by Beijing Capital International Airport, which receives flights at its three terminals from around the globe.
