Ranking as one of China's most developed cities, dynamic Shanghai packs a lot of excitement into its new and old developments alike. This was once the social playground of the Orient, and although much of its 1930s charm has been raised to the ground in favour of modern monuments, Shanghai still has a few nostalgic corners to discover.
The historical Bund houses many treasure of days past, as does the leafy Former French Concession District. Jingan offers high-end shopping while the city's sleek business heart, Pudong, is characterised by towering skyscrapers that put on a show of lights at night. This city of contrasts will have you checking out the latest fashions one minute and admiring 10th century temples the next.
Shanghai's two airports - Pudong and Hongqiao receive both domestic and international flights, with the latter being used mainly for internal connections.
